BANK DANAMON INDONESIA has chosen DST International's HiPortfolio/2 back-office solution to support its custodian administration services to external fund managers. Bank Danamon's outsourcing service has grown significantly since its launch at the end of last year. The bank said it chose HiPortfolio for its rich and comprehensive functionality, including integrated accounting capabilities.

Taiwan's CHANG HWA BANK (CHB) and Unisys have completed the first phase of an IT infrastructure transformation project, enabling the bank to unveil its Online Forex Service. This new service employs CHB's Chinese Foreign Exchange (CFX) system, which is built on Unisys's core banking business platform. Powered by a Unisys ClearPath server, the CFX system is a highly integrated, modular design that offers easy system maintenance and e-banking upgrade capability. The Online Forex Service enables CHB to more efficiently handle export/import transactions, time deposits, loans, wire transfers, derivative products, and travellers checks.

First Data Corp., a global leader in electronic payment technologies and services, announced it has signed China's first full bank-card outsourcing agreement with CHINA EVERBRIGHT BANK. Under the multi-year agreement, First Data will provide credit-card and merchant-processing services to China Everbright, China's first shareholder-owned commercial bank. China's bank card market is expected to grow as consumers adopt the use of electronic payments and general purpose consumer loans increases, and as the 2008 Olympics in Beijing draws closer.

CHINA UNIONPAY, a Shanghai-based national payment network jointly set up by a number of Chinese banks, has chosen Unisys to build a credit-card issuance system. The system will enable China UnionPay to provide card-issuance outsourcing services to its member banks. These services are aimed at empowering China's commercial banks to develop credit-card business. Although debit cards are widely used in China today, only a handful of major banks provide credit-card services. Credit-card processing and management systems require advanced technology and huge investments that most local commercial banks cannot afford.

DEUTSCHE BANK said it is considering outsourcing some of its IT operations as part of a drive to free up cash resources. The bank expects to reduce costs by 20 to 30 percent as a result of outsourcing software development. Under a $2.5 billion deal signed last January, the bank has already outsourced its European data-processing and data-centre operations to IBM. In the US, Deutsche Bank has an estimated $100 million outsourcing agreement with EDS, which is providing IT services for the North American processing operations to support expansion of the bank's domestic cash-management capabilities.

Thailand's KRUNG THAI BANK has selected Intellect Holdings to provide 1,000 TEMPO 510 attended transaction devices for use in branches. The EMV 2000-certified devices enable cardholder authentication and other transactions between customers and bank tellers. The TEMPO 510, successor to the TEMPO 310 (IPT8515), is built for rough, high-volume transactions.

STATE BANK OF INDIA (SBI), the country's largest bank, plans to enter the banking software market and set up a call centre. The bank is drawing up plans to set up a joint venture with an Indian information technology company. The new firm could be floated within the next three months, according to Indian newspaper reports. SBI has won approval from the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India to set up an information technology unit.
