Dyson deepens its commitment to developing styling tools for different hair types launching new precision engineered attachments, advocating better styling and the protection of hair health

Today Dyson launches new styling attachments engineered for different hair types, further unlocking the potential of its best-selling hair dryer.

In 2016 Dyson took its first steps into the world of beauty with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. As a technology company Dyson might have seemed a world away from the runway, but today the technology is used by some of the most beloved stylists backstage and consumers around the world.

Since its launch, Dyson has continued to deepen its research and knowledge about hair, expanding its research facilities around the world understanding the nuances of different hair types. This most recent launch stemmed from James Dyson's desire to enable the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer to style better, whilst continuing to protect hair from extreme heat damage – irrespective to whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly or coily.

Gentle air dryer: Engineered for fast yet gentle styling for fine hair and sensitive scalps, whilst also helping prevent colour fade.

The gentle air dryer provides a softer, more diffused airflow while still allowing fast drying. Much like the Dyson Airwrap styler, this attachment takes advantage of the Coanda effect. The attachment manipulates the machine's airflow to widen its path, delivering a gentle, cooler airflow to the scalp. It does this by maintaining the same amount of energy as the bare product through diffusing the air over a larger area. This allows users to have the benefit of using the product in the high flow and high heat settings.

By maintaining lower temperatures, the Gentle air attachment can help prevent against colour fade, keeping your colour brighter for longer.

Re-engineered diffuser: Dyson's diffuser has been engineered for even diffusion to help define curls and reduce frizz. Dyson's second-generation diffuser possesses a two-tiered mesh system, creating its own pressure environment within the head of the attachment. The mesh acts as a porous barrier dissipating the airflow. This results in an even distribution of low velocity airflow – enhancing and defining curls.

This attachment also has longer prongs. These are designed to channel uninterrupted airflow to the roots of the hair. The prongs also scoop back on themselves. This directs hot airflow away from the scalp while allowing the airflow to dry the hair.

Re-engineered styling concentrator: Fast, precise airflow for controlled styling, one section at a time. This is engineered for all hair types whether you're looking to create a smooth, straight finish or a bouncy blow dry. To enable more precise airflow, it is now wider and thinner.

Core technology, revisited: Dyson Digital Motor V9

The Dyson Supersonic(TM) hair dryer is powered by the patented Dyson digital motor V9, created in-house specifically for this machine. It is one of Dyson's smallest, lightest & most advanced digital motors. The Dyson digital motor is engineered to be powerful yet compact, and is small enough to be positioned in the handle rather than the head. This makes the machine engineered for balance, compared to most conventional hair dryers that have the motor in the head of the machine.

Helps protect natural shine

Some conventional hair dryers can reach extreme temperatures, especially when held close to the head, which can cause extreme heat damage to the hair. The Dyson Supersonic(TM) hair dryer has intelligent heat control, helping to ensure hair isn't exposed to excessive temperatures. A glass bead thermistor measures the temperature 40 times a second and transmits this data to the microprocessor, which intelligently controls the patented double-stacked heating element.

Fast & focused

The Dyson Supersonic(TM) hair dryer uses Dyson's patented Air Multiplier(TM) technology. The volume of the air drawn into the motor is amplified by three due to this technology, producing a high pressure, high velocity jet of air.

Traditional hair dryers can sometimes have a weak airflow, meaning they are slow. Others can have strong airflow, but it is not necessarily controlled. The Dyson Supersonic(TM) hair dryer creates a focused jet of air, angled at 20° for controlled, precise drying and styling. Allowing you to dry and style at the same time.

Acoustic engineering

A team of Dyson aero-acoustic engineers sought to understand how the acoustics of this machine could be optimised. By using an axial flow impeller inside the motor, they have simplified the pathway of the air reducing turbulence and swirling. By giving the motor impeller 13 blades instead of the usual 11, Dyson engineers pushed one tone within the motor to a sound frequency beyond the audible range for humans.

Settings and Attachments

The Dyson Supersonic(TM) hair dryer has four heat settings, three airflow settings and a cold shot setting. All the attachments remain cool to the touch. Using Heat Shield technology the hot air is contained within a sandwich of cold air, which means the surface of the attachments stay cool. Being magnetic, each nozzle is easy to attach and adjust.

Dyson deepens research into hair science and utilises air technologies to prevent heat damage

Over the last 6 years, Dyson has invested nearly GBP100m in the research, design, and development on its range of Personal Care technology. Dyson is committed to becoming a leader in the beauty industry through its deep and sustained research into the science of hair, types of damage, and solutions to the damage that people have most control over – exposure to extreme heat.

To truly understand the science of hair, Dyson created in-house hair science laboratories in Singapore and Malmesbury, where teams consisting of Dyson engineers, scientists, and stylists looked at everything from airflow dynamics to hair's cellular structure, testing nearly 1,625 kilometres of hair in the process. Beyond that, Dyson engineers conducted a global hair study on the attitudes and behaviours towards hair care and styling in order to grasp current practices of consumers who own hair dryers and stylers.

Extreme heat damage, an important cause of many hair health challenges

In the study of the issues faced by Thai females in relation to hair care, it was discovered that hair loss, flyaways, and split ends were among the most common issues experienced. With the ever increasing awareness of hair damage and its causes, they were able to identify that stress, chemical damage from hair colouring and straightening treatments, and UV damage from the sun had some of the biggest negative impacts towards the condition of their hair.

A deeper analysis showed that when it came to the issues faced during the use of hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons; overheating, smoking, drying out of hair, and concern of burning surfaces stood out as the most prevalent issues. This displays a high level of consumer awareness towards the negative effects of using hair dryers or stylers over an excessive period of time or at excessive temperatures[1].

The team examined virgin and damaged hair using electron microscopes and light chambers to understand how light reflects from the hair. Our research showed that with extreme heat, the structures within the hair become damaged and resulting in hair that is weaker and less shiny, as light scatters off the hair rather than reflecting evenly.

When hair is in a wet or damp state, the hair strands absorb water and swell, increasing in diameter by up to 16%. As this happens, the outer cuticle layer becomes slightly rougher, making it easier to damage and break the hair strands. To minimise damage, it is important that the hair is treated gently using the proper combination of both heat and airflow. This allows hair to regain its dry strength and the cuticle can return to its normal shape. If hair is exposed to excessive temperatures in the process, it leaves the hair susceptible to irreversible extreme heat damage.

Addressing the issue of extreme heat damage

Drying hair requires a combination of heat and airflow. Some conventional hair dryers can reach extreme temperatures, especially when held close to your head. The exposure to such extreme heat can cause damage to the hair.

To address this issue, the Dyson Supersonic(TM) hair dryer has intelligent heat control, helping to ensure hair isn't exposed to excessive temperatures. A glass bead thermistor measures the temperature 40 times a second and transmits this data to the microprocessor, which intelligently controls the patented double-stacked heating element.

Powered by the patented Dyson digital motor V9, It is up to eight times faster than other hair dryer motors and half the weight[2], spinning at 110,000 revolutions per minute. Combined with our patented Air AmplifierÔ technology, the volume of the air drawn into the motor is amplified by three, resulting in the delivery of 41 litres of high pressure and high velocity jet of air every second.

Creating salon finish styles without the use of extreme heat

At the heart of this story comes a radical idea: harness Dyson's digital motor to create a phenomenon known as the Coanda effect. The Coanda effect occurs when a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface and, due to differences in pressure, the air flow attaches itself to the surface.

Taking advantage of this principle, Dyson's team of aerodynamicists created a way to style hair using only air combined with heat. The result, whether you choose to curl, wave, smooth or rough dry your hair, creates a natural look with a sleek finish, helping prevent extreme heat damage.

Styling your hair should not be synonymous with damaging your hair.
