A group of Intellectual Property (IP) owners today took an innovative and novel step in its efforts to educate the public on the importance of IP.   Led by the Business Software Alliance (BSA), IP associations and owners namely the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the Thai Entertainment Content Trade Association (TECA), local record company RS Promotion, GMM Grammy, the Association of Thai Software Industry (ATSI) and the Association of Thai Computer Industry (ATCI) supported by the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce (DIP) launched a contest for students titled the "IP Family Contes".   The first time a group of IP associations and owners with the support of the Government have come together to conduct a Nationwide contest to promote IP.

During an appreciation dinner organized by BSA to appreciate the contributions of DIP, the Economic Crime Investigation Division (ECID) and the media in the war against piracy, the historic and exciting contest was launched. The contest invites students from high-schools and undergraduate students in more than 3,000 educational institutions throughout the country   to design and name a family of 4 cartoon characters that will be called the "IP Family" comprising, of course, a "father", "mother", "son" and "daughter" cartoon characters.   According to Jonathan Selvasegaram, Chair of BSA Thailand, "the objective of the contest is to get people excited about IP, help students and consumers to understand the meaning of IP and why it is important to respect and protect IP and to buy only original products."

Mr. Kanissorn Navanugraha, Director-General, Department of Intellectual Property said "The Ministry of Commerce fully supports the joint efforts of the private sectors who are various IP owners and associations to excite the community about IP.   IP is an important factor for the country's economic and society development and IP protection urges creative and development of innovations which benefits to society and consumers in general.   Meanwhile, the owner of IP can control and be rewarded for its use, and this encourages further innovation and creativity to the benefit of us all.   The DIP is happy to support this industry initiative to raise IP awareness and will be helping to publicize the winning   IP Family Characters that encourage the public to do their part and only purchase genuine products" said Mr. Kanissorn.

The contest starts from February 25 and the last submission date for all entries is April 16.   The winning entries will be announced at the BSA's 1st 2004 Software Asset Management seminar in Bangkok.   The contest offers some of the most exciting prizes ever offered including computers and original software sponsored by Adobe, Autodesk, Macromedia, Microsoft and Symantec. Entry forms and posters will be distributed to over 3000 schools, universities and other educational institutions.   Entry forms and terms and conditions will also be published in the newspapers and available for download at the following website: www.pc-a.co.th/event/bsa/ipfamily.
