Mazda injects SKYACTIV technology into new Mazda2 gasoline to rattle the Thai small car market

Japanese auto maker plans to reverse the trend with a sales target of 50,000 units in 2015

With full confidence in the Thai economy, Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd. is expanding its product portfolio with the official introduction of the all-new Mazda2 gasoline SKYACTIV. The Mazda2 gasoline is powered by a newly-developed SKYACTIV-G 1.3L engine boasting an average fuel economy of 23.3 kilometers per liter and comes with innovative safety technology as well as outstanding value-for-money. The MZD Connect system provides in-car online connection for modern customers and sets a new standard in the B-segment. The premium Mazda2 is expected to become the best-selling model in the subcompact car market, with prices starting in the Bt500,000-plus neighborhood. The sales target for the Mazda2 is 30,000 units per year.

Mr. Hidesuke Takesue, President of Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd., said Mazda is the first manufacturer to develop a subcompact car with a new set of standards. “The all-new Mazda2 SKYACTIV is equipped with the two best engines in the market, and represents the best choice for Thai customers,” he said.

“The 1.5-liter SKYACTIV Clean Diesel engine is enjoying tremendous popularity and we are completing the Mazda2 model range with the introduction of the 1.3-liter SKYACTIV-G engine which offers outstanding performance of 93hp/ 5,800 rpm with the highest torque of 123 nm/ 4,000 rpm. It is an efficient gasoline engine that offers fuel economy of 23.3 kilometers per liter. It comes with a host of standard safety features both active and passive safety. The Mazda2 SKYACTIV-G 1.3L offers eco-friendliness with just 100g/km of carbon dioxide emissions allowing it to be the first model in Thailand to pass the stringent EURO 5 emission standards. This makes the Mazda2 a premium model in the B-segment that exceeds customer expectations, and it will penetrate the market as the top pick in its segment,” Mr. Takesue added.

With the addition of the Mazda2 gasoline, Mazda plans to cater to two major customer groups. The first group consists of Mazda2 Clean Diesel buyers who are from the new generation and have individual preferences. They have clear requirements in terms of wanting a high performance car with good fuel economy, offering both high driving quality and standard. Meanwhile, Mazda2 gasoline buyers want a car that is fun to drive, agile with high fuel economy. They look for high value-for-money and superior features than the competition.

“These two groups are considered as a major market for Thailand. For both Mazda2 models, the combined sales target is 30,000 units per year, which will help drive up Mazda’s total sales to 50,000 units, a surge of 40 per cent compared to the last year, and equivalent to a market share of 5.5 per cent from the projected 900,000 vehicles to be sold in 2015,” he said.

The all-new Mazda2 gasoline oozes with the complete SKYACTIV technology and features the “KODO: Soul of Motion” design philosophy that combines the beauty of movement with high-level safety technology. Online communication is provides through the MZD Connect system, allowing continuous interactions with the world of social media.

Through the all-new Mazda2 SKYACTIV-G, Mazda intended to set a new benchmark in the subcompact car market whether in terms of design or technology that is highly efficient and offers high fuel economy. The standard features are well-equipped with attention to detail in manufacturing, making the all-new Mazda2 SKYACTIV a great value for money car that everyone can own.

Regarding the interior, Mazda looked into every detail and made sure that the Mazda2 offered higher quality than other cars in its segment. The interior provides a driver-oriented atmosphere and comes with well-match color schemes, making it highly enjoyable to be in and own. The SKYACTIV-DRIVE is a 6-speed automatic transmission that combines the benefits of every transmission systems, providing the driver with the responsiveness of a manual gearbox. Prices of the all-new Mazda2 start in the mid-Bt500,000 neighborhood while the top version that comes fully-equipped both inside and out, is priced at Bt600,000-plus. Mr. Takesue added that apart from introducing the all-new Mazda2 gasoline at the Bangkok International Motor Show, Mazda has also brought along other SKYACTIV models such as the Mazda2 SKYACTIV Clean Diesel that is both powerful and economical. At the recently-staged Mazda Clean Diesel Challenge from Bangkok to Malaysia using just one tank of fuel, the Mazda2 diesel was able to achieve a highly impressive fuel economy of 33.22km/l.

Also being displayed at the Mazda booth is the CX-5 sport utility vehicle and the Mazda3. The Mazda3, in particular, will get a special customization in order to further express its premium character with the Racing Series limited-edition model. Featuring a complete package of aerodynamic parts from Japan including black front apron, side skirts and rear spoiler, the Mazda3 Racing Series runs on special 18-inch Gun Metallic rims. Inside you will find a black piano console with Racing Series logo, newly-design leather-upholstered seats with red trim, red stitching and Racing Series logo on the headrest. Two body colors are available – Snowflake White Pearl and Soul Red priced at Bt968,000 and Bt973,000 respectively – and both hatchback and sedan body styles are available.
